The Tesla Model 3 extended its dominance over the California auto market last year, selling more cars than all other EVs combined in 2019, according to the California New Car Dealers Association. In addition, when removing other Tesla models from the count, the Model 3 sold more than twice as many cars as all other manufacturers’ EVs combined.
This made the Tesla Model 3 the third best-selling car overall in the state behind the Civic and Camry. This result is a move up from fifth place last year.
A Tesla Cybertruck prototype was used to shuttle players into a gaming competition today, and we got a good look at the “upper laser blade lights” which will come standard on the truck, as CEO Elon Musk announced yesterday.
In addition, the truck showed up with headlights looking more like they did at the unveiling – a full line of LEDs across the front of the truck. We wonder if this means that the headlights might be configurable with a more “standard” arrangement for driving on public roads and a full-array setting for off-roading (or, in this case, marketing exercises).
Porsche this week opened a showcase of the EV-charging future at its plant in Leipzig, Germany. The facility has 12 350-kW DC fast-chargers and 4 22-kW AC chargers. The total capacity is 7 megawatts, making it Europe’s most powerful rapid-charge park, according to Porsche. EV drivers, regardless of vehicle brand, can use the facility free of charge through March – before a standard charging plan takes effect.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk is on a roll with more announcements about the Cybertruck today. He described a “towing calculator” which will show all kinds of real-time stats to help drivers know more about what their vehicle can handle while pulling a big load.
Researchers at the University of Michigan this week published a paper entitled, “Strategies to limit degradation and maximize Li-ion battery service lifetime.” The goal was to examine the best strategies for extending battery life, including for EV batteries. In the project, which was conducted in cooperation with the Responsible Battery Coalition, an industry association, researchers compared the owner’s manuals for electric cars with academic research.
The Climate Group has more than doubled the number of EV100 members in the last year, and approximately 42,000 electric vehicles have been deployed across members corporate fleets, despite a lack of EV supply to meet demand.
Volvo Trucks North America is working to complete product development to bring its VNR Electric Class 8 truck and tractor to market here by the end of this year. Full production is slated to get under way next year.
